Getting your hair coloured is always exciting, whether you're going for a bold change or a subtle refresh. But did you know that how you prepare your hair before your appointment can make a big difference in the final result?
Many people are surprised to learn that the condition of your scalp and hair at the time of colouring affects not only the outcome but also how long your colour lasts. Here’s what you should know before stepping into the salon.
Understand Your Scalp and Hair Type
Everyone's scalp is different. Some people experience a lot of oil and sweat buildup between washes, while others have a drier scalp. That natural buildup of oils, sweat, styling products, and dirt can create a barrier that stops colour from properly penetrating the hair shaft. This means you may not get the vibrancy you want, and the colour might fade more quickly than it should.
Clean Hair is Key (Yes, Even Before Colouring!)
One of the biggest myths out there is that you shouldn’t wash your hair before getting it coloured. In reality, the hair does need to be clean but not freshly scrubbed and stripped of natural oils right before your appointment. It’s all about balance.
We always recommend washing your hair the day before your colour appointment with proper technique including shampooing twice. (Check out the previous blog on shampooing). This ensures your scalp and hair are free from heavy buildup but still retain a healthy layer of natural oils that protect the scalp during the colouring process.
Why This Matters
If the hair isn’t clean, grease and dirt act like a film over your strands. This not only blocks colour from penetrating properly but can also lead to patchy results or faster fading. Avoid heavy styling products or dry shampoos in the days leading up. Clean hair allows for even application and better absorption, giving you the best possible outcome and longer-lasting colour.
By following these steps, you're not just preparing for your appointment—you're helping us give you the results you really want.
